"According to Diakonisches Werk Karlsruhe, women in prostitution often work on a self-employed basis in both Germany and other European countries. This is something that is refuted by Helmet Sporer, one of the most experienced police officers with over 30 years of dealing with prostitution. Up to 90% of the women in the country's sex trade industry did not purse this profession voluntarily."
The world of prostitution never ceases to surprise me. Just when you thought things couldn't possibly get any worse, they did. In the German city of Karlsruhe, the charitable organization The Diakonisches Werk, which is run by a number of Protestant churches, signed an agreement of cooperation with numerous brothels whose purpose is to establish a quality seal of approval for the brothels. According to the evangelical institution, the seal of approval, which already involves twelve brothel operators and prostituted persons, is meant for those establishments "that commit themselves to compliance with standards with regard to the protection and well-being of women". For example, the evangelical institution wants to offer beginner training courses in how to deal with sexbuyers and support with specializing in certain areas of the prostitution industry.
According to Diakonisches Werk Karlsruhe, women in prostitution often work on a self-employed basis in both Germany and other European countries. This is something that is refuted by Helmet Sporer, one of the most experienced police officers with over 30 years of dealing with prostitution. Up to 90% of the women in the country's sex trade industry did not pursue this ”profession” voluntarily. Whether to prohibit pimping and the buying of sex is a subject filled with controversy within the churches in Germany. There are different stances when it comes to prostitution, and several social associations, both Protestant and Catholic, have spoke out against a ban with the motivation that things would only get more dangerous for the women caught up in prostitution.
For me personally, being raised within the four walls of the church, I cannot stop thinking about what Jesus would have said about the fact that a few of his churches seem to be closing ranks with brothel operators, the very same people who are getting rich on the misery of the most poor and vulnerable.
