Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the ROSE Community Event!
Artists Okano and Dragu created a respectful participatory process to shape the public event. Women on the Downtown Eastside came out early in the process to add meaning and content to the scarves that were later worn by people the day of the event. About 200 people came out and did a walking meditation in memory of the women and girls missing and murdered. Native women performed the Women's Warrior song. Squamish Elder Audrey Rivers gave a blessing. MP Hedy Fry welcomed everyone and gave a speech reminding us what the world has lost when a woman is murdered. People wore Haruko's hearts on their sleeves. Lady Justice performed a rising up and salt cleansing ritual for our lost loved ones. In closing, the scarves were hung up on a clothesline and displayed as banners for the remainder of the day, blowing in the cold wind.
