Poverty & Equality

July 16, 2009I read in amazement the other day that our dear Prime Minister Mr. Harper was berating the other G8 countries for not fulfilling their obligations to help alleviate poverty in other nations. He was quite right to do so but as with other things, what about our own country? Canada has one of the highest child poverty rates in the world. Various provinces are now drafting and implementing Poverty reduction and elimination plans but our National government doesn’t believe poverty is a…See More

Gender & Equality

I was reminded the other day of something I heard a few years ago from someone who had been at the Beijing conference. That women from other countries felt sorry for women in the western world as we had been sold a “bill of goods” that we were better off than women in other countries when it came to equality. The reminder was during a discussion on gender equality when a young woman stated that things were different today and that gender equality was no longer a problem. How sad when the…See More

How true,

I am a male, and I care.

In –equality is ingrained in law, organizational design, social structure, informal opportunities and expectations, employment, respect and relationships. Despite valiant efforts around education, prevention and intervention we still have it. Today – there has been progress but there are many things we can do better. We need to do much better for the sake of our daughters, nieces, partners, sisters and for future generations. And for our sons and brothers – make no mistake, this is a critical issue. For today and if you understand the theory around it for all tomorrows

Perhaps what is most important in focussing on this issue is the vicarious issues. We have societies and communities that do not respect and value all people. That is not taught to be a central, fundamental part of our world. We raise children to condone and participate in hate, violence of many forms and to not consider their communities and the people that touch their lives. To me, and many other largely silent people, that is not acceptable, and if we gave the issue the same kind of thought we did to ‘seat belt safety’ or smoking we would apply resources that would save countless women’s lives, their children from a negative experiential pathway and communities from continuing cultural illness.

Understanding is the key, from birth to adulthood there are a myriad of factors that perpetuate violence as a means of control in relationships (the least macho of all male activities), social, legal and corporate inequality, and socialization of children, adolescents and adults.

Gender equality, equality of all kinds is about respect, kindness, and perhaps most importantly truly valuing and celebrating the gifts of each other. Hokey words but cool ways of being. Important stuff. This is a huge issue that will require many supporters all the time, of all segments of our society.
